Terms

Terms of service.

Last updated 26 May 2026

These terms govern your use of Mappth — our 1:1 maths tutoring and the student and parent portals — and our separate, free Mappth app on the App Store and Google Play, and form an agreement between you and Marcus Hanmer, a sole trader trading as “Mappth”, based in the UK. For the tutoring service the agreement is with the parent or guardian who arranges it, because our students are usually under 18. The standalone Mappth app can be used by anyone without an account; the app sections below set out the terms for it. By applying for or using Mappth, you accept these terms. Questions? What Mappth provides

Premium 1:1 maths tutoring with Marcus, plus access to the student and parent portals and the Learning OS — study notes, flashcards, quizzes, worksheets, mock exams, and AI study tools that support a student’s maths revision between lessons.

Separately, we offer the Mappth app — a free GCSE maths revision app for iOS and Android, with an optional paid AI assistant. It’s a self-study tool, distinct from the 1:1 tutoring service, and the app sections below set out its terms.

Getting started

Tutoring begins with an application and a short intro call. We may decline to take on a student if we don’t think we’re the right fit. Once a student is onboarded, we set up accounts for the parent and the student, each accessed by a secure email link.

Lessons

Lessons are scheduled in Mappth and delivered online over Google Meet. We’ll agree a regular pattern that suits the student.

Fees and payment

Fees are in pounds sterling and agreed before we start. We bill in one of two ways, which we’ll confirm with you: a monthly block of four lessons paid in advance, or pay-as-you-go invoices after each lesson. Invoices are issued and paid through Stripe.

Cancelling and rescheduling

Life happens. You can cancel or reschedule a lesson through Mappth, and we don’t charge late-cancellation fees. If you’ve paid in advance for lessons you don’t end up taking, we’ll refund or credit them.

Using Mappth

A student’s account is personal to them — please don’t share login links. Mappth and its content are for the student’s own learning. The AI study tools are designed to guide thinking with questions rather than hand over answers: they support the student’s own work and our lessons, they don’t replace them, and they’re not a way to complete assessed work a school expects a student to do independently.

AI, and the limits of it

Mappth uses AI heavily, and while we work hard to keep it accurate, AI can occasionally be wrong. The AI study tools are a support, not a substitute for the human tutor or the student’s own judgement. Anything AI-generated that we send to parents is reviewed by Marcus first.

Our content and methodology

Mappth owns the platform, the Mappth Method, and the teaching and practice material in Mappth. We give students a personal, non-transferable licence to use it for their own study while they’re with us. Please don’t copy, share, sell, or republish it.

The Mappth app

The Mappth app is a free self-study app for GCSE maths, available on the App Store and Google Play. It’s separate from our 1:1 tutoring and from the student and parent portals, and using it doesn’t make you a tutoring client. It needs no account. We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use the app and its content for your own GCSE revision. Please use it lawfully and don’t misuse it — for example, don’t try to copy, resell, reverse-engineer, or disrupt it.

App content and intellectual property

All the content in the Mappth app — the questions, flashcards, theory, worked examples, and revision materials — is Mappth’s own original work, and we own it. We don’t reproduce exam-board papers or other third-party material. Please don’t copy, share, sell, or republish the app’s content; your licence is for your own personal study only.

The £5/month AI subscription

The app is free. Its one paid feature is an AI assistant, offered on a single subscription of £5 per month. Billing is handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play — not by us — and managed through RevenueCat. The subscription renews automatically each month until you cancel, and you can cancel at any time in your App Store or Google Play account settings; you’ll keep access until the end of the period you’ve paid for.

Refunds are governed by Apple’s or Google’s refund policies, since they process the payment. Nothing here affects any non-excludable rights you have under UK consumer law, including any right to cancel within 14 days where it applies. We never receive or store your card details.

The app's AI — and its limits

The AI assistant is there to support your revision by guiding your thinking. Like all AI, it can sometimes be wrong or incomplete, so don’t rely on it as a definitive source — always check anything important against your specification, textbook, or teacher. It’s a revision aid, not a guarantee of any grade or exam result, and it doesn’t replace teaching. The app is a self-study tool, provided separately from and as no substitute for the 1:1 tutoring service.

App availability, liability, and the app stores

We provide the app “as is” and “as available”. We may update, change, or withdraw the app or any feature, including the AI assistant, and we can’t promise it will always be available or error-free. To the extent the law allows, our liability to you in connection with the free app is limited; where you’ve paid for the AI subscription, our liability is limited to the amount you’ve paid for it. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law — such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Apple and Google distribute the app and process the subscription payment, but they aren’t party to this agreement — your use of their stores is also governed by their own terms.

What we aim for — and what we can't promise

We’re genuinely committed to helping students improve, but no tutor can guarantee a specific grade, exam result, or university place, and we don’t. What we promise is to teach with care and to give the student the tools and support to do their best work.

Our responsibility

We’ll provide tutoring with reasonable care and skill. To the extent the law allows, our liability to you is limited to the fees you’ve paid us. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law — such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Ending the arrangement

Either of us can end the arrangement at any time. If you’ve prepaid for lessons you haven’t taken, we’ll refund or credit them, as above.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. We’ll update the date above and let you know of any significant changes.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. Questions? Email mappthtutoring@gmail.com.
